The Velocio Trail gloves ($79) are an off-road, full-fingered cycling glove that is equal parts heavy on the mesh for enhanced ventilation and optimal padding to absorb bumps and vibrations on the trail.

What I Liked

Comfortable. Good cycling gloves improve your grip on the handlebars, reduce blisters, absorb bumps and shocks and offer protection during a crash. They should never feel like you’re wearing a baseball glove. The Velocio Trail gloves feel don’t feel like gloves at all.

Velocio Trail Gloves riding the Canadian Shield trail near Grand Marais, MN

Shock absorption and ventilation. Patches of reinforced synethic mircosuede on the upper and lower palm work amazingly (shockingly, actually) well in absorbing bumps on long and technical trails. For ventilation, they have a series of air holes that allow moisture to escape, as well as stitched fingers in the tips that allow air in.

Microsuede pads at the top and bottom of palm for shock absorption and air holes for ventilation

Outstanding fit. I wear a women’s size small in gloves and the Velocio Trail women’s size small provides an outstanding fit.

Strapless design. I’ve worn gloves for years that have a velcro strap to ensure that perfect fit. But I love that the Velocio Trail Gloves are a pull-them-on-and-go design. Once pulled on they remain snug, secure and very comfortable. Removing them is just as fast and easy.

What I didn’t
Like

Stitching in the fingertips introduces a potential failure point. All my
full-fingered gloves are seamless in the fingertips. Because of this I don’t
have to worry about my longer fingernails eventually piercing the threads. If
you have chewed-down fingernails, or habitually keep them short, this won’t be
an issue.

The stitching at the fingertips do well for airflow but introduce a point of failure, especially if you have long nails

Price. At $79, they’re expensive. The most expensive I have ever worn.

Final Thoughts

Despite the stitching in the fingertips, these are phenomenal
gloves. The grip is excellent, even on wet handle bars and are easy to remove
after a long sweaty ride. They really are the best fitting, best feeling biking
glove I’ve ever used.

The Pearl Izumi Attack glove ($30) is a cycling glove that minimizes the damage to hands from crashes, harmful UV rays and the energy-zapping vibrations from road and trail.

What I Liked

Contoured gel padding. Not only does this do a great job of absorbing road and trail vibrations to mitigates numbness and fatigue in my hands and wrists, it’s shaped to fit into the arch of my hand.

Paw side up: Gel padding in the palm of the hand

Flaps under the middle- and ring-finger holes. A little thing, maybe so little that Pearl Izumi didn’t think it worth mentioning in the product specs but I love this feature. With many cycling gloves that are designed to fit like the first skin (as opposed to the second skin), the glove removal process can require the jaws of life. These come off easy. Just insert finger tips under the finger flaps and your paws are free.

Flaps under the middle and ring finger for easy removal

What I didn’t Like

They’re snug. I have small hands and the size small gloves feel more snug than I like. I was hoping that after all the miles of riding they would loosen up a bit but they’re still pretty snug. Not cut-off-my-circulation-and-need-hand-amputated snug but I think I’d be happier with a size medium.

Paw side up: A little snug but doesn’t cause discomfort or cut off blood circulation

Ventilation comes up a little short. On days that are warm and humid and the rides are long and hard, my hands feel clammy and bloated. This could be a by-product of the snugness.

Final Thoughts

The Pearl Izumi Attack gloves are fantastic for absorbing trail vibration, no question about that. But try them before you buy them. You may need to go one size up depending on the size of your hand.
