The Topeak JoeBlow Sport 2 Stage pump ($100) inflates tires via a 2-barrel design to efficiently and quickly air tires from low pressure to high pressure, outperforming an industry-leading brand.
Efficiency & Operation
The JoeBlow Sport 2 Stage Pump is meant to be more efficient for filling tires with lower pressure. The Topeak site says it is 30% more efficient than other pumps due to its high volume chamber and use of both barrels.
From 0-30 psi, you use the 2 barrels, and from 30-160 psi, you use Stage 2 or one barrel to reach up to 160 psi. It has a dual-head design for both Presta and Schrader valves and comes with a needle adapter to fill up balls, etc. at home. It’s tall, which aids in not having to bend over so far, and has a sturdy, wide, and heavy base.
Topeak JoeBlow Sport 2 Stage vs Serfas FP-200
I emptied out my 700×38 gravel tires and did a comparison of Topeak JoeBlow Sport 2 Stage and the Serfas FP-200.
Round 1
Pumps to 30 PSI | Pumps to 85 PSI | Total Pumps * = winner
Topeak JoeBlow Sport 2 Stage | 5.5 | 30 | 35.5* |
Serfas FP-200 | 12 | 25 | 37 |
Round 2
Pumps to 30 PSI | Pumps to 85 PSI | Total Pumps * = winner
Topeak JoeBlow Sport 2 Stage | 5 | 29 | 34* |
Serfas FP-200 | 12 | 24 | 36 |
I found that the Serfas performed much better on the higher pressure end than did the JoeBlow Sport. However, as Topeak indicated, the JoeBlow outperformed the Serfas in lower pressures. In total, though, the final tallies were pretty negligible, with a difference of 3-5 pumps more using Serfas.
For me, whether or not to buy this pump really depends on what type of pressures you normally run. If you are riding a road bike, I wouldn’t see much difference. However, if you tend on lower pressures of 50 and below, the JoeBlow would help you save some pumping energy for your bike riding.
If you already have a pump at home, I think the difference is pretty negligible but if you are in the market for a new pump, and run lower pressures, the JoeBlow Sport 2 Stage would be a great pump for you.
Warranty
I compared this with my Serfas FP-200 pump I’ve had for quite a long time. I’ve always liked Serfas because of their warranty and how easy it is to walk into any shop that sells them without a receipt and get help with their lifetime warranty.
Topeak has a 2-year warranty but seems to have more requirements like a receipt.
Improvements
One thing I would love to see Topeak improve on is the presence of replacement parts online. Serfas’ webpage has a clearly marked replacement part category on its homepage and you can buy replacement parts for your pump easily on their site.
I couldn’t find this on Topeak’s website and it looks like calling customer service must be the way to go. I would love to see a more efficient process for purchasers to obtain replacement parts.
